I escaped to Virgina for a few days so that I could get away from the freezing weather and snow. This is such an exciting area to be. The history of our wonderful country all started in this area.
Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in America. 
The most interesting fact I learned about Jamestown was in1609–1610, over 80% of the colonists perished, and because of this the Spanish ( who wanted to control of the area , and out numbered the English)
refused to attack the "deadly" town. Otherwise we would be all Spanish speaking Americans.

the main reason the English General wanted Yorktown, was because in the 100 degree weather 
Yorktown has an amazing wind that kept the mosquito's away and kept the troops cool. It also was very well protected with the river on one side.

the English loaded up their troops to head acrossed the river and on their way over that once great wind turned on them and a storm sunk 20 of the English boats, and turned the tide of the battle and thus the English surrendered.

My ancestor, Edward Brinton was part of the Jamestown settlement. Once when John Smith went back to England he was left in charge of making sure Pocohantos had enough to eat... Generations of Gorntos [that is how the name ended up] lived and still live in the Virginia Beach area... mine moved down into Georgia and then into Florida.
